Balloon_frameIn building construction, balloon framing refers to a technique of constructing the exterior walls of houses and other relatively small structures. Balloon framing has largely been replaced by platform framing, and both are examples of light-frame construction.The first balloon frame is attributed to the American settler Augustine Taylor, for the 1833 St. Mary's Church at the corner of Lake and State Streets, at Fort Dearborn, Illinois (now downtown Chicago). This was an innovation away from carpentered brace frame construction, which was a legacy of medieval construction practice, and which required labor-intensive mortise and tenon joinery. "Balloon frame" was a derisive name, which stuck. The church was thought by Taylor's contemporaries to be flimsy and fragile. In fact, this was false, and the technique of balloon framing quickly spread throughout the United States and overseas. New sawmill technology allowed the creation of the standardized 2 by 4|two-by-four. T! hat, with the availability of mass-produced nails, made balloon frame construction the cheaper and quicker alternative to the brace frame, and the preferred way of building. A balloon frame uses long vertical two-by-four members (2 x 4 inch timber lengths) that span multiple floors. In platform framing, which replaced balloon framing as the construction standard a few years later, the vertical members only rise for one story. |

The article below is mainly about the pollen source from a beekeeping perspective.The pollen source in a given area depends on the type of vegetation present and the length of their bloom period. What type of vegetation will grow in an area depends on soil texture, soil pH, soil drainage, daily maximum and minimum temperatures, precipitation, extreme minimum winter temperature, and growing degree days. The plants listed below are plants that would grow in USDA Hardiness zone 5. A good predictor for when a plant will bloom and produce pollen is a calculation of the growing degree days. The color of pollen below indicates the color as it appears when the pollen arrives at the beehive. Bees mix dry pollen with nectar and/or honey to compact the pollen in the pollen basket. Dry pollen, is a food source for bees, which contains 16 - 30% protein, 1 - 10% fat, 1 - 7% starch, many vitamins, but little sugar. The protein source needed for rearing one worker bee from larval to adult stage requires approximately 120 to 145 mg of pollen.
